Clean up your files with PURGE and OVERKILL: Fix heavy and duplicate filesFile maintenancestart

.

🧹 1. PURGE command: Purge unused items.

The PURGE command is responsible for removing unused items from a file (Drawing Database), which often cause the file to bloat unnecessarily.

Items that can be deleted by PURGE:

PURGE will find and remove these items from the file, without affecting the objects currently displayed in the drawing screen:

  • Blocks: Blocks that are defined in the file but not inserted.

  • Layers: Empty layers (no objects)

  • Linetypes/Text Styles/Dimension Styles: Line styles, text styles, and dimension styles are not used.

  • RegApps (Registered Applications): Data from external applications that often cause file size and problems.

🚀 Save time with PURGE:

  • Reduce file size: Files are significantly smaller, allowing for faster opening/saving and saving storage space.

  • Reduce confusion: Unnecessary Layers, Blocks, and Styles are gone, making them easier to choose from.

Tip: Some items require repeated PURGE commands to be completely removed (or use the command -PURGEin the Command Line to select Purge RegApps).

🔨 2. OVERKILL Command: Fix Duplicate Objects

The OVERKILL command corrects one of the most common and common errors in design: overlapping objects ( overlapping geometry).

Issues fixed by OVERKILL:

  • Duplicate Lines: For example, there are five straight lines drawn overlapping each other in the same position.

  • Partially Overlapping Lines: For example, two straight lines are on the same line but slightly overlap each other.

  • Merge Objects: Continuous lines can be merged into a single Polyline (depending on settings).

🚀 Save time with OVERKILL:

  • Fixed printing issue: Duplicate lines when printed are too thick (Plotting Error) OVERKILL helps to eliminate this issue.

  • Performance Improvements: Removing redundant objects makes the file lighter and reduces the problem of incorrect object selection.

  • Reduced editing steps: Instead of manually deleting duplicate lines one by one, OVERKILL can do it for the entire file in one go.

OVERKILL SETTINGS:

When running the OVERKILL command, a window will appear to set the deletion resolution, such as:

  • Tolerance: Defines the acceptable distance between objects that are close enough to be considered redundant.

  • Ignore object properties: You can choose which properties to ignore in the consideration (e.g., ignore different Layers or different Linetypes).

Summary: File maintenance

Regularly using the PURGE and OVERKILL commands together is a "file cleanup" that should be performed before every delivery, ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the DWG file.

Figure 1: AutoCAD File Problems Before Cleaning The image shows a cluttered and "heavy" looking AutoCAD file, suggesting problems such as stacks of paper (representing repeated lines), floating trash icons (representing unused Blocks/Layers), and a frustrated user with a slow computer, suggesting problems with the file not being cleaned up. `

Figure 2: The PURGE command in action The image shows the AutoCAD screen with the Purge Command window open, displaying unused items (e.g., Blocks, Layers, Linetypes) that are selected for deletion, with a "trash can" or "vacuum cleaner" icon moving around to delete unnecessary items, signifying the purging of junk from the file. `
